Saturday, 20 Nov 2010 02:03 PM

CHICAGO (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun has officially kicked off her campaign for Chicago mayor, joining a crowded field that includes former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

Braun now runs an organic food company. She's running to replace retiring Mayor Richard Daley. He announced in September that he wouldn't seek a seventh term.

The 63-year-old Braun made history when she was elected in 1992 as the first black woman in the U.S. Senate. She lost her re-election bid in 1998 and was later named ambassador to New Zealand. She ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004.

The other declared candidates in the mayor's race include City Clerk Miguel del Valle, former Chicago school board president Gery Chico, state Sen. James Meeks and U.S. Rep. Danny Davis.
