Former President Bill Clinton says Republicans left the national economy a "mess" and will make matters worse if they reclaim control of Congress.

Clinton appeared at a campaign rally Friday with first-term Democratic Rep. Mike McMahon, one of a handful of House Democrats from New York thought to be vulnerable in November. McMahon's district covers Staten Island, the most Republican-leaning of New York City's five boroughs.

Clinton praised McMahon for his independence, noting he had voted against President Barack Obama's health care reform plan.

He also said McMahon would be criticized for supporting Obama's $800 billion stimulus plan, which he says saved millions of jobs.

Tory Mazzola, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said voters reject McMahon's record and now he's calling on his friends in Washington to save his career as a politician.
