ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska Senate race is headed for another nailbiter in the rematch between Sen. Lisa Murkowski and tea party favorite Joe Miller.

Supporters from both sides prepared Wednesday for a prolonged ballot count.

Write-in ballots held the lead in the hotly contested three-person race late Tuesday, a potentially good sign for Murkowski's long-shot effort to keep her job.

With 71 percent of precincts reporting, write-ins had about 40 percent of the vote. Miller had 35 percent and Democrat Scott McAdams had about 24 percent.

Miller narrowly beat Murkowski in the Republican primary in August, prompting her to mount the write-in bid.

Murkowski expressed confidence at a rally that the campaign is close to victory, though it could take days or weeks to sift through all the votes.
