Employers should hire veterans because of the skills they gain from their military service, said Senate hopeful Rep. Tom Cotton, a former U.S. Army captain.
"It's not just the concrete skills you learn in the military, like knocking out a bunker . . . It's the intangible skills that we learn. Leadership, overcoming adversity, teamwork, dealing with ambiguity," the Arkansas Republican told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Monday. "That's why I tell employers, just hire a veteran."

Veterans have often taken on leadership roles in Iraq and Afghanistan, Cotton said. Military personnel have worked with "local sheiks, trying to ensure that the people of those countries were supporting our mission."
Cotton faces incumbent Democrat Sen. Mark Pryor in a battle for the Arkansas Senate seat. Pryor attacked Cotton earlier this month, claiming he had a "sense of entitlement" to be in the Senate, based on his service in the military. A recent poll by Real Clear Politics
poll showed Cotton with a slight edge over Pryor.
Cotton said he entered the Army after attending Harvard Law School and working in private practice long enough to pay off his student loans. He said the 9/11 attacks on the United States "really kind of changed my path in life." His service included tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
