The Democratic group formed to turn Texas into a Democratic state over the next few election cycles is hosting its first Washington, D.C., fundraiser in July.
Battleground Texas, launched in January by former Obama campaign national field director Jeremy Bird, is hoping the event will encourage young Democrats to get involved. The invitation asks for donations of $50 to $1,000, according to Politico
"Grassroots activists in Texas are thrilled that after years of funding national efforts — and making calls or knocking doors to support electoral fights in other places — they are now on the receiving end and will have the chance to make a difference in their own state," said Bird.
The group aims to swing Texas to the Democrats in time for 2020 presidential race by mobilizing supporters and finding first-time voters, including many in the growing Hispanic population
. Similar micro-targeting strategies were successful in both of Barack Obama's presidential campaigns.
Republicans have held every statewide legislative position in Texas since 1994. Mitt Romney carried the state in 2012 by a 16 percent margin.
Still, some in the Texas GOP say the party must remain vigilant to fight off potential threats to its future dominance.
"Republicans who are complacent are kidding themselves if they think Battleground Texas is not a threat," GOP state Attorney General Greg Abbott said Monday in a speech to Republicans.
