Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich must abide by his promise not to engage in negative campaigning against his competitors – or “friends,” as he calls them. But the pro-Gingrich super PAC, Strong America Now, faces no such constraints. And it’s starting to blow the socks off of Mitt Romney, Gingrich’s main rival, MSNBC reports.

Strong America Now is sending direct mail pieces to Iowans this week showing support for the former House speaker while pillorying the former Massachusetts governor.

"Romney is the second-most dangerous man in America and will perpetuate Obama's slide into financial crisis," one of the pamphlets says. "Don't let Romney backers mislead you!"

As for its pro-Gingrich material, that mailer reads, “Newt Gingrich has the proven experience eliminating the deficit and making America prosperous."

Another Strong America piece terms Gingrich "the right choice," saying he is the only candidate with a track record of shrinking the budget deficit. Meanwhile, Romney "has refused to sign a pledge to eliminate the deficit by the end of his first term in office. ... Romney's plan comes nowhere close to eliminating the federal deficit – at any point."
