Republican Bob Smith is considering making a run to regain the New Hampshire Senate seat he lost in 2002.

If he made it through the primary, he likely would face incumbent Democrat Jeanne Shaheen.

"I am giving it serious consideration," Smith told the New Hampshire Union Leader Friday. He said he plans to make up his mind in two to three weeks.

Several activists representing the full range of Republican ideology have contacted Smith about running, he said. The former senator lives in Florida but has a summer home in Tuftonboro, N.H.

Smith was elected to the Senate in 1990 and held the seat for two terms before losing to John Sununu in the 2002 Republican primary. Sununu, the son of George H.W. Bush's White House chief of staff, won the general election but lost to Shaheen in 2008.

Sununu has said he doesn't plan to run in 2014.

Smith, 72, spent three terms in the House before running for the Senate. He made a bid for the presidency in 2000 and three years ago flirted with running for Senate from Florida.

His biggest policy concern is the government's $17 trillion debt, Smith said.

"We need leadership to try to head that off. I did have a voting record over 18 years of anti-deficit, anti-debt.  I lost that battle, but now we need to turn it around before it is too late."
