Florida Gov. Rick Scott is gaining ground on possible Democrat opponents as his job approval rating soars, according to a new Quinnipiac University Poll.

But he still lags both Republican-turned-Democrat Charlie Crist and Sen. Ben Nelson each by 10 percentage points.

Crist, the Sunshine State's former governor, leads 47 percent to 37 percent— a 6 point improvement for Scott since March. Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson is also ahead of Scott 48 percent to 38 percent.

The Florida governor is experiencing his highest job approval rating ever at 43 percent approval to 44 percent disapproval, up from the 36-to-49 rating he had in March according to the survey taken among 1,176 registered votersfrom June 11-16.

Although registered voters in Florida say that Scott does not deserve a second term as their governor by 50 percent to 35 percent, even that percentage is the best he's had so far regarding that question.

"It's an indication of how far down Florida Gov. Rick Scott's numbers have been that he can take some solace from a poll that finds him losing by 10 point to his predecessor in the governor's office," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Connecticut university's Polling Institute.

"Now that doesn't mean that happy days are here again for the governor, but if he is going to make a comeback these are the kind of steps that would be required. Whether it is the start of something larger, we'll see in the coming months," Brown added.
