“With the agreement between business and labor, every major policy issue has been resolved,” on immigration reform, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., says.
Appearing on “Meet the Press” Sunday, Schumer, a member of the “Gang of 8” senators crafting legislation on this issue, said he expects a bill to be on the Senate floor by May.
“This is a major, major obstacle that’s been overcome,” Schumer said of getting labor and business together.
Asked if the bill is dead if Florida Republican Marco Rubio doesn’t support it, Schumer emphasized that he doesn’t think Rubio will walk away. “He is protecting some of the things he thinks are very important in the bill.”
On gun control, Schumer said he is happy to see Mayor Michael Bloomberg taking action in the debate. Organization on the issue has traditionally all been on the other side, with the National Rifle Association and other opposed to more restrictive laws.
“I greatly respect Mayor Bloomberg’s passion on this,” Schumer said. “To have a counter (to the NRA) there is very helpful.”
