President Donald Trump is still learning that "Washington always wins," and the more he struggles, "the deeper he gets in political quicksand," MSNBC's Joe Scarborough said Monday.
"The courts are going to grab you," the "Morning Joe" host said on his show about people who don't play by Washington's rules. "The intel community is grabbing the other leg. The House is going to grab you by the arm. The Senate will grab you by the other arm."
Trump does not seem to understand that "the more he flails, the more he lies, the more he struggles, the deeper he gets in political quicksand," Scarborough continued.
Scarborough's comments came during a show roundtable discussion about Trump's poll numbers, and after David Ignatius, an associate editor and columnist for The Washington Post, commented that Trump is dealing with problems that he's never before encountered, and his "brash business tactics" are resulting in his poll numbers declining at home and around the world.
According to a Gallup poll released Sunday, Trump's approval ratings have dropped by 8 points to 37 percent from the week before.
Ignatius said it is hard to imagine why Trump introduces issues which he will lose on in the end, but that's the way the president has done business.
"If you look at his business career and he is negotiating, it's bluster at first," he said. "If you make a charge against him, he'll sue back and never settle and never say, 'I was wrong, I made a mistake, I'll retreat.' It's just not his style."
"There was an amazing German poll that showed in four months since the November election, trust in the United States as an ally has fallen from 55 percent down to 22 percent," said Ignatius.
"That's an extraordinary change and that tells you there is a cost for this kind of behavior on the part of Donald Trump."
