Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney already has made it clear that he is skipping this year’s straw polls. The former Massachusetts governor also has no plans to attend a Republican convention in California next month, according to a San Francisco Chronicle blogger.

The Sept. 16-18 convention in Los Angeles is expected to draw about 1,000 attendees.

One of Romney’s strong competitors, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, has signed up as keynote speaker for the convention’s first night. Texas Rep. Ron Paul is slated to meet with his supporters at the convention during its second day.

Many politicos thought Romney would at least drop by. Chronicle blogger Carla Marinucci, who doesn’t cite sources for her story, speculates that he’s writing off the state.
