A campaign adviser to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., has admitted to using a Twitter account to ridicule a Democratic challenger to Brown. The candidate, Alan Khazei, was mocked for the past month on a Twitter feed called “CrazyKhazei,” The Boston Globe reported.

The author of the account was Eric Fehrnstrom. In addition to working on Brown’s campaign, Fehrnstrom has been advising Romney on strategy and working on ads. He was Romney’s communications director when Romney was governor, the Globe reported.

The tweets were sophomoric at best but also veered into more serious territory. One, which purported to speak for Khazei, dealt with Brown’s decision not to participate in the anti-suicide  “It Gets Better” campaign directed towards gay teens. It calls the ads “making gay videos” and said, according to the Globe, “I promise to devote all my time in office to making gay videos. Shame on Scott Brown for focusing on jobs!”

Fehrnstrom admitted he was the person behind the “CrazyKhazei” tweets in an email to the Globe.

“It was my Twitter account,” he said. “Sometimes we take our politics too seriously and this was my way of lightening things up. As they say in politics, if you can’t stand the tweet, get out of the kitchen.”
