House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, should lose his position as speaker if he allows a vote on the immigration bill currently being debated in the Senate, says Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif.

Conservatives have been urging Boehner to observe the "Hastert Rule," an unwritten command that no bill should be brought to a vote on the House floor without the support of the majority party, reports The Hill.

The "Hastert Rule," named after former speaker Dennis Hastert, isn't an actual rule, but Rohrabacher says that if the bill passes the Senate and Boehner brings it to the floor without Republican support it would be a "betrayal" of his party.

The Senate is trying to get an overwhelming majority of support for its bill in hopes of giving it a push in the House.

“If Boehner moves forward ... and permits this to come to a vote even though the majority of Republicans in the House — and that’s if they do — oppose what’s coming to a vote, he should be removed as Speaker," Rohrabacher said.

Rohrabacher said he doesn't know whether a majority of Republicans support an immigration bill, but added that if they do it is because it has been misrepresented by the media and by companies who just want to import cheap labor.

"I don’t intend to bring an immigration bill to the floor that violates what I and what my members of my party, what our principles are," Boehner said last week, according to The Washington Post.
