BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A person familiar with the decision says former Louisiana Gov. Charles "Buddy" Roemer plans to announce that he is creating an exploratory committee for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

The 67-year-old Roemer on Wednesday wouldn't talk about the creation of the committee. But the person familiar with the plan confirmed it to the AP on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to announce it publicly.

Roemer has publicly mulled a run for the GOP nomination for months. Forming a committee would make him a legal candidate for the nomination.

The former congressman has been out of elected office since the early 1990s. He served one term as governor, from 1988 to 1992, switching from the Democratic Party to the GOP while running for re-election.
