In what has been called one of the most volatile Republican presidential campaigns in history, the Republican Party actually grew one percentage point in December while Democrats dropped two points to the lowest level ever, according to Rasmussen Reports.

The new survey found that, in December, 35.4 percent of Americans considered themselves Republicans, compared with 34.3 percent in November, Rasmussen Reports says. The party’s highest number for the year was 35.6 percent in May.

Meanwhile, only 32.7 percent of registered voters said in December that they were Democrats, down from 34.9 percent in November, Rasmussen says. The lowest point for the Democrats this year was 33 percent in August.

Americans reporting no affiliation with either party rose from 30.8 percent in November to 32 percent in December.
