Former President George W. Bush tells Parade magazine he doesn’t think the GOP’s best days are over, and he thinks his brother Jeb should seek the presidency himself in 2016.

In the interview appearing in Sunday’s Parade magazine, Bush says he hopes the public would judge his brother on his own merits if he decides to run.

When asked how the Republican Party can best position itself for 2016, Bush said they should nominate someone who can stand by principles and explain why conservative principles are better for the vast majority of Americans.

“I’m not one who believes that the Republican Party is doomed forever,” he said.

The George W. Bush Presidential Center, including the Bush Institute, will be dedicated on April 25, and will help the former president stay engaged in policy – but not in politics. He told Parade he’s had enough of the latter.

“Fourteen years was enough for me . . .  but I do want to stay engaged in issues that matter to me.”

And former first lady Laura Bush gives some background on her husband’s newfound passion for painting.

He gave up cigars, she said, and needed a new hobby. After reading Winston Churchill’s “Painting As a Pastime,” he began doodling stick figures on his iPad app. That led to painting lessons.

“George is very determined and he’s very, very disciplined,” Laura Bush tells Parade. “ He paints for a lot of hours a day and it transports him. You know, he’ll go up to clean his brushes and then glance at his watch and he’s been up there for two hours.”
