Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s efforts to portray himself as a regular guy in the last week of campaigning in New Hampshire may do lasting damage to his campaign. During the week before his primary win Romney said he started “at the bottom” when he entered the work force, feared getting a “pink slip,” and asserted he didn’t own four homes, The Washington Post reported.

However, Romney is the son of an automobile magnate who attended a private prep school, then Harvard, and was courted by consulting firms before starting his own firm. He, in fact, did own four homes before downsizing to three. In other words, Romney’s self-descriptions don’t ring true and the candidate seems to have realized it, the Post reported.

“If you think I should spend my entire campaign carefully choosing how everything I say relates to people, as opposed to saying my own experience and telling my own experience, that would make me a very different person than I am,” Romney said, according to the Post. “I’m going to tell people my own experiences in life, and I realize they’re not the same as everyone else I speak with, but I’m going to tell you about myself and if people like that, great.”

Romney’s remarks about getting a pink slip could follow him to the next primary in South Carolina Jan. 21 where his lead in the polls is not as big as it was in New Hampshire. His GOP opponents have already used the comment to paint Romney as a corporate predator, the Post reported.
