Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., is having hip-replacement surgery.
Spokesman Garrett Hawkins said the 55-year-old congressman's surgery was taking place Friday in his home state.
Gosar has been having increasing discomfort in his hip as a result of playing rugby during his college and graduate school years, Hawkins said.
Hawkins said recovery from a hip replacement can take up to 20 days and that Gosar won't be able to return to Washington until the risk of blood clots has passed and his doctor has cleared him to fly.
Gosar is serving his second term in the House. He represents Arizona's 4th Congressional District, which includes west-central and northwestern Arizona.
Hawkins said Gosar has been in Arizona this week for tests and other preparations for the surgery.
