Obama Heaps Praise on Romney, Huntsman – to Beat Them

Talk about killing your opponents with kindness. President Barack Obama and his allies have offered effusive praise in recent weeks for potential Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman, Politico reports.

Mitt Romney
The compliments come despite the fact that former Massachusetts Gov. Romney and Huntsman, Obama’s former ambassador to China, represent two of the biggest threats to the president’s re-election. Actually, Obama and company offer the plaudits precisely because of that threat.

What the praise is really meant to do is taint the potent challengers with a liberal patina that will hurt them with the conservative base as they seek the Republican nomination.

The strategy hasn’t escaped attention. “You may have noticed,” Romney told New Hampshire Republicans last weekend, “that the president and his people spend more time talking about me and Massachusetts health care than Entertainment Tonight spends talking about Charlie Sheen.”
