Clock Ticking Down for Obama Appointments

Friday, 03 Jun 2011 08:20 AM

By Dan Weil

President Barack Obama will have to make a big push soon if he wants to see his choices for dozens of top executive and judiciary positions filled before next year’s election, Politico reports. These top slots are subject to Senate confirmation.

And nominees who don’t gain that confirmation before year’s end probably will stay unconfirmed through the election. That’s because, once Republican senators — and even some Democrats — start thinking about the election, they’re going to be very hesitant to approve any liberal nominees, and possibly some moderates, too.

“As we get closer to the election, every nomination under consideration becomes a little surrogate for the election, as the Republicans filter their willingness to allow nominees through their electoral spectacles,” G. Calvin Mackenzie, government professor at Colby College, told Politico.

“It’s going to be harder and harder for this administration to put anybody in office now that has any kind of ideology objectionable to Republicans.”
