Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has endorsed Rep. Jack Kingston over businessman David Perdue in Georgia’s GOP Senate primary runoff.
"I counted on Jack Kingston to help me implement the Contract with America, enact welfare reform, and balance the budget for the first time in a generation," Gingrich said. "I can say from firsthand experience that he is a tireless reformer dedicated to advancing our conservative values.
"Now is the time for conservative reformers like Jack Kingston who will take bold action to shake up the status quo and renew the American dream for generations to come. I urge all Georgia Republicans to unite around conservative Jack Kingston."
Kingston is facing Perdue in the July 22 runoff, and the winner will go on to face Democrat Michelle Nunn in the November general election to fill the open seat of retiring Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
Kingston has been endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and by Newsmax.
A member of the House since 1993, he was part of the "Newt Gingrich Revolution" that eliminated welfare and balanced the federal budget for the first time in decades.
The GOP is hoping for a victory in Georgia to help take back control of the Senate.
