Family values conservatives and pro-life activists have lined up solidly behind Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum in his battle with businessman Rick Scott for the Republican nomination for governor.

Pro-life leader Phyllis Schlafly, president and founder of the conservative grass-roots public policy organization Eagle Forum, and Gary Bauer of the Campaign for Working Families are among national leaders who have endorsed McCollum for the GOP nomination.

The statewide co-chairmen of Social Conservatives for Bill McCollum — John Stemberger, chairman of the Florida Family Policy Council, a group associated with Dr. Dobson’s Focus on the Family, and Denis Baxley, former executive director of the Christian Coalition — has announced the statewide coalition of grass-roots supporters in virtually every county in the state.

“There is a now a clear consensus among the leadership of the conservative pro-life and pro-family movement that Bill McCollum is the only candidate we trust to stand in support of life, marriage and family issues,” they said in a joint statement.

“Grass-roots leaders in virtually every region of the state are supporting Bill McCollum and the numbers are growing daily. We will not allow our state to be bought by a Texas billionaire lawyer who has lived here for only less than a decade.”

In Stemberger earlier strong endorsement of McCollum, he had declared: “Operating the executive office of the fourth-largest state in the country requires a level of experience and a command of public policy that only Bill McCollum brings to the table.”

Many social conservatives are wary of Scott because the hospital chain he founded provided and profited from abortion services.
