After a week in which a painful family feud over gay marriage erupted in public, Liz Cheney has bought nearly $40,000 in TV time in Wyoming to help bolster her flagging campaign to win the Republican primary for a Senate seat, Politico reported Friday.

Cheney, who is challenging incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi in next August's primary, has reserved $31,540 for broadcast and another $7,092 for cable ads to run from next Monday through Sunday, Politico reported.

Cheney put up $55,838 for her first ad, designed to counter attacks that she's a carpetbagger by highlighting her roots in the state. The 60-second ad was set to run across the state over nine days; most of the ad money is for ads in the Casper area, Politico reported.

It wasn't known whether the new ad purchase would finance a shorter version of the same spot, or would be a new version in the wake of the bitter exchange between Cheney and her lesbian sister, Mary, over gay rights.

The previous ad ran 60 seconds. Reservation records show that the broadcast buy this time is for a 30-second spot, but a spot on Fox News will run in 60-second chunks, Politico reported.

More than half the money is going into the Casper market, with $11,000 in Cheyenne. The rest is spread across peripheral markets.

The Cheney campaign didn't comment.

Cheney said on Fox News on Sunday that she opposes gay marriage, prompting Mary
Cheney and her wife, Heather Poe, to criticize Liz Cheney on Facebook.

Parents Dick and Lynne Cheney then issued a public statement that sided with Liz Cheney.

Politico Magazine later reported that Mary Cheney is not supporting her sister's Senate bid.
