Former Virginia governors Tim Kaine and George Allen are locked in virtual dead heat for a Senate seat being vacated by Sen. James Webb, D-Va. A Quinnipiac University poll showed Democrat Kaine holding the support of 43 percent of registered voter and Republican Allen with 42 percent, The Washington Post reports.

kaine, allen, webb, senate“Perhaps the only surprising thing about these numbers, given the expectation of a ‘to the finish’ tussle for the Senate, is that one in 10 Virginia voters remains undecided,” Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, told the Post. “Those are the folks who will decide the identity of Virginia’s next U.S. senator.”

The Senate race might hinge on the presidential contest. President Barack Obama, the first Democrat to carry the state in more than 40 years, has a 48 percent approval rating in Virginia, the poll showed. Obama has the support of 43 percent of registered voters against an unnamed Republican challenger, who received 41 percent, the Post reported.

Voters split 47 percent to 47 percent on whether Obama deserves re-election and 74 percent said they liked the president personally. Voters were split 47 to 48 percent when asked if they liked most of his policies.

“President Barack Obama’s great strength looking toward re-election in Virginia, as in many states, is that voters like him personally by an overwhelming margin,’’ Brown told the Post. “The Republicans must make this election about his policies if they are to prevail in 2012.’’
