Jon Stewart Mocks NYTimes Coverage of Marco Rubio

By Greg Richter   |   Thursday, 11 Jun 2015 04:45 PM

"Daily Show" host Jon Stewart ripped into The New York Times on Wednesday for its coverage on GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio's traffic tickets and finances, suggesting that the Gray Lady is getting too nitpicky.

First, it was the Times story on Friday that the Florida senator and his wife had been issued 17 traffic tickets in 17 years. Only four of those were Marco Rubio's, and he successfully contested two of them.

"Marco Rubio got four tickets in 17 years. I assume The New York Times obtained this damning information from Marco Rubio's plaque in the Hall of Best Miami Drivers Ever," Stewart said of the state that is the butt of jokes for its share of bad drivers.

Next, Stewart took up the Gray Lady's front page expose this week on Rubio's finances, which hit him for running up debt and then using a $800,000 book deal to pay it off and buy an $80,000 fishing boat.

"Paying off law school loans. How dare you?" Stewart said mockingly. "At long last, senator, have you no sense of insolvency?"

If the Times' take on the so-called scandals weren't enough, Stewart said, TV news one-upped the story, showing video of money being printed and plugging it with the line," Splurging on luxury items? Get a peek inside Marco Rubio's bank book. Do his past money troubles matter?"

"Wow. Suddenly the man who paid off his student loans and got a boat is printing counterfeit hundreds in his basement," Stewart said.

Rubio is actually getting the last laugh, using the stories for his own fundraising efforts.
