Florida Democratic Rep. Joe Garcia has mocked Republicans for prioritizing border security in the context of the immigration debate, saying that America's borders are safer than most other places in the United States because people in those areas are given government jobs.

"We've proven communism works," he said. "If you give everyone a good government job, you have no crime," he said in an online discussion with constituents. Garcia added that the safest cities in America are those where most residents are government employees.

Garcia went on to say that the country should not be spending as heavily on border security because the returns on that investment are diminishing.

When challenged by the Miami Herald about his commitment to communism, Garcia pushed back, denying any literal interpretation of his comments.

"This is an absurdity. Accusing the son of Cuban immigrants of believing in communism is just ridiculous," he told the newspaper.

Garcia blamed America Rising PAC, the conservative group that first posted the video, for any misinterpretations that may have resulted from his comments.

They "would have posted the video anyway," he said, according to the Herald.
