John McCain: Gov. Brewer Should Veto Anti-Gay Bill

By Wanda Carruthers   |   Tuesday, 25 Feb 2014 03:54 PM

Sen. John McCain urged Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer to veto a controversial state bill that would permit business owners to refuse service to people if they felt it violated their religious beliefs.

"I hope that the governor will veto this bill," the Arizona Republican told Fox News' "Happening Now" on Tuesday. "It's the impression that it's creating, because it is viewed as discriminatory."

The Arizona governor has until Saturday to decide the bill's fate. Supporters of gay rights claimed the law was discriminatory and unconstitutional.

Three state senators who originally voted for the bill have since changed their minds, which "would have prevented it from being passed," McCain explained. Fellow Republican Sen. Jeff Flake also recommended Brewer veto the measure.

McCain admitted there was justification for some "back and forth argument" about whether the bill was actually discriminatory. But he said the bill's passage could negatively impact the state's tourism industry and affect Arizona's economy and job creation.

"The entire business community of Arizona is urging a veto of this bill because of the impact they think it would have," McCain said.
