Robo-Calls Pushing Hillary Clinton for President Hit Seven States

Wednesday, 21 Dec 2011 12:47 PM

Robo-calls touting Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as president have been placed in Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Clinton has repeatedly denied she has any intention of running for president and the source of the calls remains a mystery, The Washington Post reported.

“America would be better off today if Hillary Clinton was our president,” a woman’s voice says on the call, according to the Post. “The Wall Street robber barons would be jailed, young people could afford college and find jobs, and 6 million homeowners wouldn’t face foreclosure.”

The call then directs the listener to a website, RunHillary2012.net, to sign a petition to urge Clinton to run.

“It’s ridiculous. This is all just silly mischief-making by a very small group of people with nothing better to do,” Mo Elleithee, who served as a press secretary during Clinton’s 2008 run for the presidency, told the Post.

Former Clinton pollster Doug Schoen and Pat Caddell, who conducted polls for former President Jimmy Carter and then-Sen. Joe Biden, have pressed the case for Clinton to make another run for the presidency. But both expressed amazement at the calls and told the Post they had nothing to do with them. Whoever is behind the campaign have taken steps to conceal their identity, purchasing the domain name through a proxy.

“Nobody really knows,” Shaun Dakin, who started StopPoliticalCalls.org, told the Post. “There are all kinds of theories. It’s the Republicans, it’s Karl Rove. It’s Schoen and Caddell. It’s the PUMAs.”
