Nebraska GOP Sen. Deb Fischer said that Border Patrol officials told her the illegal migrant crisis is likely to take a turn for the worse when temperatures drop, Breitbart reported.

"After visiting both DHS and HHS detention facilities, there is no doubt that once in U.S. custody, these children are treated humanely," Fischer wrote in a Facebook statement. "There is also no doubt, though, of the severity of this crisis, which is expected to worsen once again as temperatures cool in coming months."

Fischer toured the border and Department of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services detention facilities along with Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, Susan Collins, R-Maine, Angus King, I-Maine, John Boozman, R-Arkansas, John Barrasso, R-Wyoming, and North Dakota Democrat Heidi Heitkamp. The delegation also met with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske.

"I'm grateful I had the opportunity to join a bipartisan group of my colleagues to gather information firsthand from those responsible for apprehending and detaining Central American children illegally crossing our southern border," Fischer wrote.

She said that the U.S. Border Patrol been "forced to operate less efficiently in order to cope with statutory constraints preventing them from safely and quickly returning these children home."

More money is only part of the solution, she said. "I believe now, more than ever, that changes to current law to expedite the repatriation process are the key to solving this problem."
