Corporate and nonprofit activists say that Donald Trump appearing less concerned about the environment is not a negative prospect, because more corporations and multinational companies are joining those efforts, according to Yahoo.
Nature Conservancy CEO Mark Tercek pointed out that "Walmart is being enormously constructive," for example, according to the Yahoo report.
Progress with conservation has helped the company's bottom line, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said.
Walmart reported that it had doubled its U.S. fleet's efficiency in 2015, saving 650,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and almost $1 billion. The store chain has hit a 25-percent mark for using renewable energy, higher than the 9.4 percent average from U.S. companies.
"Running on renewable energy has turned into joining the global effort to combat climate change; reducing waste has evolved into seeking a circular economy in which materials can be continually recycled," McMillon said in the company's 2016 Global Responsibility Report.
Energy Independence Now executive director Brian Goldstein said at the NationSwell Summit that, "It's not, 'Hey, we want to save baby seals,' but 'This is going to make economic sense.'"
Yahoo looked at a case study focusing on cable and satellite operators. A 2013 agreement has led to a 15.9 percent reduction in energy use and a 36-percent drop in energy used by DVRs (digital video recorders).
Noah Horowitz, the National Resource Defense Council's Center for Energy Efficiency director, said President Barack Obama's administration had little to do with the effort.
"Under a different White House we would have likely achieved a similar outcome," Horowitz said in Yahoo's report.
By focusing on corporate strategy, Horowitz said they were able to make savings happen quickly, "rather than wait five-plus years for a national standard to take effect."
Battles from the Trump administration appear to be on their way. Myron Ebell, Trump's appointment to run the transition at the Environmental Protection Agency, is a denier of climate change and opposes reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, according to The Washington Post.
