Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, the former Republican who is running for Senate as an independent, is receiving support from national Democratic fundraiser Nancy Jacobson.
She organized a conference call last week to aid Crist, Roll Call reports. Jacobson was finance charwoman at the Democratic National Committee during the Clinton administration and is married to Democratic political strategist Mark Penn, who is close to the Clintons.
In an Email sent to Democratic donors and lobbyists and obtained by Roll Call, Jacobson wrote, "I can assure you that this call will provide you with an opportunity to know the Governor of Florida better, and I am certain you will end up realizing that he is one of the most promising national leaders of our generation."
Without a party to back him or money of his own, Crist is hoping to hit up fat cat Democrats for cash.
Former Democratic state House Speaker T.K. Wetherell and other prominent state Democrats hosted a recent Crist fundraiser in Tallahassee.
Crist’s moves may cause some concern for Democratic candidates Rep. Kendrick Meek and multi-millionaire Jeff Greene.
Bill Clinton has been an early supporter of Meek, and Meek aides told Roll Call that the Jacobson call doesn’t indicate Clinton’s support is wavering.
Rasmussen Reports’ latest poll shows Crist in a dead heat with former state House Speaker Marco Rubio, the likely Republican nominee, at 37 percent each. And Meek trails at 15 percent, assuming he wins the Democratic nomination.
