John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is being encouraged by leading conservatives to consider a presidential bid in 2016.

And based on his travel schedule, the Republican from Maryland appears to be listening.

Bolton has trips planned to Iowa and New Hampshire, the two states that traditionally have the first nominating contests. Later this year and into 2014, the former Reagan and Bush official will start an informal national tour, the National Review reports, citing unnamed sources.

During his travels, Bolton, who will turn 69 12 days after the 2016 election, is expected to give speeches and build relationships with GOP leaders.

If he decides to throw his hat into the ring, he could prove to be a counter to libertarian and potential presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky on foreign policy. While Paul argues for less intervention in foreign conflicts and a smaller military budget, Bolton would make the case for a more robust foreign policy.

Bolton briefly considered running in 2012. He has said he hasn't made up his mind for 2016, but sources suggest he is giving it serious consideration, according to the National Review.
