Vice President Joe Biden has reached out to former staffers and campaign workers in an apparent move to let them know that he could use their help for a 2016 presidential run, The Washington Post reported.

Members of Biden's network of Senate, vice-presidential, and campaign aides were invited to "hear from the vice president as to what he's working on" by participating in an "alumni call."

Biden told those attending that he simply wanted to stay in touch and regretted not having done so sooner, the Post reported.

Biden is reportedly laying the groundwork for a run, according to Jason Linkins at The Huffington Post. Supporters say he is the man President Barack Obama has repeatedly turned to during times of crisis and national tragedy and that he is emerging with more influence than Obama himself.

The vice president represented the administration at this year's National Governor's Association meeting and is advising Obama on a job training initiative, meeting with visiting foreign dignitaries, and pushing for immigration reform, according to his Twitter account.

He is scheduled to be in Detroit Thursday afternoon to deliver the keynote speech at the annual meeting of the progressive Netroots Nation group.
