Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney is launching a concerted counterattack against accusations that, as co-founder of private equity firm Bain Capital, he was responsible for thousands of Americans losing their jobs, Politico reports.

The strongest criticism of Romney has come from the camps of Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry as well as the Democratic Party. The Romney campaign plans separate responses to the Democrats and his Republican rivals. Television ads are being prepared. And Romney’s going to address the issue himself, according to Politico.

A super PAC supporting Romney unleashed a new advertisement Thursday, accusing Gingrich of being “desperate” for attacking the party’s front-runner – but then launches into a series of attacks against him.

Titled “Desperate,” the ad is airing in South Carolina and Florida, the site of the remaining two primaries this month.

The ad from the Restore Our Future super PAC quotes the National Review, Rush Limbaugh and the Club for Growth saying Gingrich’s attacks against Romney’s time at Bain Capital are “foolish,” “out of bounds” and “disgusting,” respectively.

“Newt attacks because he has more baggage than the airlines,” the ad says. “Newt was fined $300,000 for ethics violations, took $1.6 million from Freddie Mac and co-sponsored a bill with Nancy Pelosi that would have given $60 million a year to a U.N. program supporting China’s brutal one-child policy.

“Don’t be fooled by Newt’s desperate attacks,” it concludes.

Other ads will feature employees of companies started by or saved by Bain. These workers will tell their positive stories, which contrasts with the documentary released by the pro-Gingrich super PAC that shows upset employees of four companies closed by Bain.
