New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's tweet to mark Presidents Day has sparked speculation that the Democrat is toying with a run for the White House in 2016.

The light-hearted message, tweeted to @NYGovCuomo's 107,000 followers Monday, pointed out that of all the states, New York has had the most governors who went on to become president of the United States.

"Maybe Andrew wants to be the fifth," Bronx Democrat and former state Assemblyman Michael Benjamin told The New York Post.  "I'll tweet that back at him."

Other pundits pondered whether the tweet was intended as a barb at former New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is widely presumed to be the Democratic Party nominee for president in 2016 but has never been governor, the Post reports.

"It's Andrew Cuomo being mischievous. He's tweaking everybody — including Hillary Clinton," political consultant Hank Sheinkopf told the Post.

A source told the Post, however, that Cuomo's tweets are written by a staffer who was thinking about history rather than politics. "No slight intended or perceived," the source said.

Andrew Cuomo was elected in 2010 and faces re-election this year. He has not signaled whether he is actively considering a bid for the White House.
