Advocates Eye Legalizing Marijuana in Alaska

Alaska could become the next battleground in the push to legalize recreational marijuana use.

The state is reviewing a request from supporters seeking approval to start gathering signatures to qualify the measure for next year's ballot.

The proposal would make it legal for those 21 and older to use and possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana. However, they would not be allowed to smoke in public. The proposal also would set out provisions for legal grow operations and establish an excise tax.

It's significantly different from a failed 2004 ballot effort that would've allowed adults 21 and older to use, grow or sell marijuana without penalty under state law.

Supporters say attitudes toward marijuana have softened in the past decade, and believe they have a real shot at success.
