President Donald Trump said Republicans will pass legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare by the time he reached his 100-day mark next week, telling reporters Thursday "we're doing very well on healthcare."

"There's a great plan, and this will be great healthcare," the president said at the White House with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni at a news conference. "It is evolving.

"There was never a give-up," Trump said, referring to the American Health Care Act that was pulled twice from a House floor vote last month. "The press sort of reported there was like a give-up.

"There's no give-up. We started.

"Remember, it took Obamacare 17 months. I have been negotiating this for two months."

Trump marks his 100th day as president of the United States on April 29.

He said the ACHA "gets better and better and better — and it has gotten really, really good.

"We have a good chance of getting it soon," the president added. "I would like to say next week, but I believe we will get it, and whether it is next week or shortly thereafter."

Trump also pledged the federal government would not shut down April 28, the deadline for Congress to pass a spending bill.

A 16-day partial government shutdown in 2013 cost American taxpayers $1.4 billion.

"We want to keep the government open," Trump said. "Don't you agree?"
