Andrew Young Compares Trayvon Martin to Emmett Till

Civil-rights leader Andrew Young says he spoke with Trayvon Martin’s mother after the acquittal of George Zimmerman and compared Martin’s death with that of Emmett Till — calling both martyrs in the ongoing racial struggles of African Americans.

"It's a needless sacrificial death and I told that to his mother [Sybrina Fulton]," Young, a former ambassador, U.S. congressman, and two-time mayor of Atlanta, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"I said, you know, Dr. [Martin Luther] King always said that unearned suffering is redemptive and that in the church, we've always said that there's no remission of sins without the shedding of innocent blood.

"I [also] told her, I feel sorry for Zimmerman too. I mean his life is ruined.

"Trying to substitute a gun for real manhood is not the way we want to raise our young people. That was a no-win situation for America. And every incident of violence is that way."

Martin was shot to death by Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, during a confrontation in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman was acquitted of murder and manslaughter amid allegations the incident was sparked by racial profiling.

In 1955, Till, 14, was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi, when he was beaten and shot dead for reportedly flirting with a white woman. Two men were acquitted of Till's murder, but admitted it later in a magazine interview, protected against double jeopardy.

Young spoke with Newsmax shortly after participating in the 50th anniversary celebration of Martin Luther King’s iconic "I have a dream" speech.
