Texas AG Abbott: Obama Seeks to Undermine State's Voting Integrity

By John Bachman   |   Friday, 23 Aug 2013 04:05 PM

The Justice Department's decision this week to sue Texas over its law requiring voters to show photo identification represents an attack on the state's voting integrity, says Texas GOP Attorney Gen. Greg Abbott.

"We've seen this coming, because we know this is all politics by the Obama administration," Abbott told Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview. "Barack Obama is sending his legal team to the state of Texas trying to prevent integrity at the ballot box."

Ironically enough, just days before U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced the suit, the U.S. Justice Department arrested a woman in Fort Worth, Texas for voting illegally five times in the last election, Abbott said.

Story continues below.

"So voter fraud exists in the state of Texas. Voter ID is one way to stop that voter fraud. It's stunning that the Obama administration would use political tactics to try to prevent us from having voter ID."

The Justice Department's suit claims that the Texas law discriminates against minorities. But, "I know for an absolute fact it doesn't have anything to do with race, because I know for a fact that voter ID laws are race neutral," Abbott said.

"Those aren't my words, those are the words of the United States Supreme Court, which has already upheld voter ID laws."

Having prosecuted voter fraud throughout Texas — more than 50 cases — Abbott has seen that "it's real, it must be stopped and voter ID is one way to stop it," he said. "We're using every tool to try to stop voter fraud, and the Obama administration is trying to use every tool to prevent us from stopping voter fraud."

What Obama and his fellow Democrats really want is Texas' 38 Electoral College votes, Abbott said. "And one way they can try to do that is to tilt the legal scales in the state of Texas in their favor."

The Obama administration is trying to undo the Supreme Court's June decision on the Voting Rights Act — a decision that made clear it's state governments, not the federal government, that have the power to regulate elections, Abbott said.

"The Obama administration is directly violating that ruling from the United States Supreme Court, trying to say they're the ones who have the power, not the states. And so this is a clear instance of the Obama administration violating the 10th Amendment."

The White House clearly thinks it's above the Supreme Court, and Holder is applying a double standard, Abbott said.

"They're saying that by Texas using voter ID, we're somehow being racially discriminatory," he said. "Well, what about the National Democrat Convention where they required IDs for their attendees to show up at the convention? Was that racially discriminatory?"

Bottom line, Abbott said: "the United States Supreme Court has already said that voter IDs are perfectly constitutional."
