The Department of Defense has started to portray America’s Founding Fathers as political extremists, according to Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch.

"In today's military, you can't say jihad but you can pretend that the Founding Fathers were extremists and, in the same breath, tie them to the KKK and al-Qaida," Fitton told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

He said his group uncovered a student guide entitled "Extremism" from the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institution, which is a Department of Defense agency.

Story continues below.

"Specifically, the document states in U.S. history there are many examples of extremist ideologies and movements," he said.

"The colonists who sought to free themselves from British rule and the Confederate states who sought to secede from the northern states are just two examples.

"Later in that same section, the document lists the 9/11 attack under a category of historical events. So believe it or not, there's someone in our military sending out training material that in the same breath lists our Revolutionary War and 9/11 as being kind of historical equivalents."

The federal publication also states that now, "instead of dressing in sheaths or publically espousing hate messages, many extremists will talk of individual liberties, states' rights, and how to make the world a better place," Fitton said.

"What does that sound to you like? It sounds to me like the IRS guidelines for attacking tea party groups."

Fitton accused the Department of Defense of tamping down on Christian ideology.

"If you have a traditionalist view of Christianity or a traditional Christian world view, it looks like you're unwelcome in today's military," he said.
