Reports that Jews have been asked to register with a pro-Russian interim government in an eastern Ukraine province or risk deportation "sparks memories" of the Holocaust, according to one Democratic strategist.

Speaking on The Steve Malzberg Show on Newsmax TV, Hank Sheinkopf referenced the Ynet News report that Ukrainian Jews leaving Passover prayers outside a synagogue were approached by armed, masked men and handed fliers telling them to register with pro-Russian forces occupying Donetsk or risk having their citizenship revoked.

The authenticity of the leaflets has since come into question.

Sheinkopf likened the initial news reports to "historical accounts of the most researched crime in the history of the world known as the Holocaust," when after Nazi invasion, Ukrainian police were used in the round-up of Jews in Lviv, Lutsk and Zhytomyr for the Babi Yar massacre.

"The Ukrainians were very much involved in working with the Germans in those activities and they didn't like – here is a case where they can get some revenge and they choose to," Sheinkopf said. "The problem is what's the world going to do? Where's the outcry and how quickly will there be one if there is to be one?"

Story continues below video.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry denounced the act, saying "In the year 2014, after all of the miles traveled and all of the journey of history, this is not just intolerable, it’s grotesque. It is beyond unacceptable."

Sheinkopf, however, was critical of how President Barack Obama has dealt with Vladimir Putin, doubting that there would be tougher pressure exerted on the Russian president from the White House.

"President Obama's made his decision," Sheinkopf told Malzberg. "He looked into Putin  — while George Bush's predecessor also was wrong when it came to dealing with Putin — he looked into Putin's eyes and saw something that the rest of the world hadn't seen.

"Obama looked into his eyes and saw something different. The rest of us who are rational saw a fascist killer who was a KGB spymaster and who made killing people his way of life. This guy has no borders, no morals, and no boundaries. It's hard to believe that he's directly involved in registering Jews, but it's not hard to believe the Ukrainians are involved. Where's the president? That's the question."
