President Barack Obama's love of "selfies" — self-portrait photograph snapped on camera phones — proves he is obsessed with himself, says Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt.

"Honestly, he's a product of his times and he's become this cult of personality, this sort of icon," Hurt told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV, discussing how that sort of thinking affects Obama's everyday decisions for better or worse.

"You have to realize there are other people around you, you can't always be the center of the universe, and you have to understand how they're thinking," Hurt said Wednesday.

"You also have to figure out what your own frailties are, and you know, when you play it all out, this guy is so obsessed with himself and completely consumed with himself that he's really not able to understand what is going on in a place like Ukraine."

Hurt said the bottom line is that Obama has become "the selfie president."

It is possible that Obama's "selfie" obsession may be curbed after a public relations fiasco that occurred when the Boston Red Sox baseball team visited the White House earlier this month as  2013 World Series champions.

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz snapped a selfie with the president on his Samsung mobile phone and posted the image to Twitter.

But it later emerged that Ortiz had an endorsement deal with the phone service provider and possibly snapped the picture for promotional purposes.

Ortiz insisted there were no ulterior motives, but Dan Pfeiffer, White House senior adviser, told CBS News' "Face the Nation": "Whenever someone tries to use the president's likeness to promote a product, that's a problem with the White House."
