Sandra Fluke, the birth-control rights activist, said Rush Limbaugh actually did her a favor when he famously called her a "slut."

Appearing on MSNBC's "The Ed Show" on Thursday, Fluke was introduced by host Ed Shultz, who said, "I think Limbaugh did you a favor by putting you out there like that …. I  mean exposure is very important, people now look to you in a big, big way for leadership on some very pertinent issues."

"I agree with you that exposure is important," Fluke agreed, "because it lets us shine a light on important issues we need to be talking about."

Fluke announced Wednesday she would be seeking a seat in the California Senate after having toyed with the idea of running for the congressional seat being vacated by Democrat Henry Waxman.

She said she decided to run in Sacramento rather than Washington, D.C., after asking herself, "Where can I go and get progressive change done?"

Congress has become so deadlocked, she told Schultz, that she feels state legislatures are currently the best place to take up the fight.

Fluke, currently a social justice attorney, first came to national prominence in 2012 when she was denied the ability to testify before a House committee on whether contraception coverage should be required in insurance plans at the Catholic university she attended, Georgetown.

She ended up testifying before a Democratic panel instead.

Limbaugh sparked controversy when he said on his radio show, "[Fluke] essentially says that she must be paid to have sex. What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

Limbaugh later apologized after a backlash that caused some of his sponsors to abandon the show.
