Al-Qaida has transformed itself into a terrorism powerhouse under the presidency of Barack Obama, according to retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters.

"When Obama came to office [in 2008], al-Qaida and its sympathizers were a broken lot. Not totally destroyed, but they were utterly broken," Peters told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

Story continues below video.

"And despite Obama's lies to the contrary, al-Qaida is now far, far stronger than it was five years ago … Al-Qaida, which was a beaten, broken force hiding out in northwestern Pakistan, is now back in Iraq, it's in Syria, it's in Lebanon, it's in Libya," Peters said.

Peters, a Fox News strategic analyst and author of the novel "Hell or Richmond," says the Obama administration has "allowed al-Qaida and other Islamist factions to put guns and knives, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars, even missiles in the hands of ruthless killers."

He suggests the top priority of the United States should be to crush al-Qaida.

"I would start by killing al-Qaida wherever we find it by whatever means we can . . . Use our intelligence and send an air strike," Peters said.

"Every day, every terrorist, every al-Qaida terrorist we kill improves our security. Every last one."
