President Barack Obama's liberal policies could lead the United States down a "really nasty and ugly" path, Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt says.

"The sad thing about President Obama is, I used to think that he was this smart guy, he knew everything, he just kind of had a liberal [slant]" Hurt told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"I don't know that anymore . . . I don't think he's evil, but he clearly has never cracked a political philosophy book or he's never read a single word that was written about the founding of the country in terms of what our founders were worried about in terms of unchecked government.

"If he can run roughshod all over this, so can the next guy. And before long, you get somebody really, really nasty and ugly in there, and then we have a problem."
