Bolton: Obama 'Five Years Too Late' on Stopping Iran Nuclear Work

By Greg Richter   |

President Barack Obama will travel to Saudi Arabia on Friday with plans to assure King Abdullah the United States will prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

But former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton says he's about five years too late.

The Saudis have said that if Iran gets nuclear weapons they will, too, and Bolton told Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" on Wednesday that the promise won't take long to fulfill. In fact, he predicts a Middle East arms race as American allies rush to keep up with their common foe Iran.

Some speculate that Saudi Arabia already has made a deal with Pakistan to buy some of its nuclear weapons as soon as Iran is able to develop them, Bolton said. They'll just have to move them across the border.

"There's absolutely no doubt if the Iranians get nuclear weapons, the Saudis will get nuclear weapons, Egypt will, Turkey will, and perhaps others," he said.

Van Susteren asked what Obama can say to Abdullah to make him feel at peace that the U.S. won't let Iran get nuclear weapons. Bolton wasn't optimistic.

"Beats me, because I don't think the president's going to do what's necessary to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons," he said. The Obama administration to date has done nothing to stop Iran in its quest, he said.

Bolton is among critics of the White House's deal with Iran to halt economic sanctions for six months while Iran says it will pause development of its nuclear program. The pause began on January 20.
