The mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard is an issue of security and mental health, not for the need for stronger gun laws, says Lis Wheil, a Fox News Channel legal analyst.

"If the security had been better [the shooter] would never have gotten even near that gate and so it wouldn't have been a gun issue at all," Wheil told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"There was a Supreme Court decision a couple years ago being very, very strong on gun laws in Washington, D.C. . . ."

"It's less to do about gun control than it is about treating mental illness."

Wheil is the author of the book, "A Matter of Trust," part of her Mia Quinn mystery series.
