Michele Bachmann: Debt Ceiling Increase 'Needs to Happen'

By Greg Richter   |   Wednesday, 18 Sep 2013 06:20 PM

House Republicans are crafting a plan to raise the debt ceiling for one year while also delaying Obamacare for a year, and Rep. Michele Bachmann sees it as a winner.

"We're running out of time, and we're looking at a debt ceiling increase that needs to happen," Bachmann, a Republican from Minnesota, told Fox News Channel's Neil Cavuto on Wednesday.

The Treasury Department has "gone into little sock drawers and they've pulled $250 billion out to hold us over, but they're running out of rabbits to pull out of a hat," Bachmann said. Treasury has said the debt ceiling needs to be raised within the next month.

Cavuto noted that House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, doesn't seem to be really happy with any plan to defund the Affordable Care Act. He asked Bachmann if Boehner is letting down members of the tea party, such as herself, who have been pushing for defunding at the risk of shutting down the government.

Bachmann disagreed. "I think that we can take a victory lap here," she said, "especially with members of the tea party who let their voices be known. And the leader is letting us know he's hearing us."

She said that tying the defunding to the debt ceiling puts Obama in "a very tight box."

"I think we're going to pull this out, and I think we're going to win," she said.
