WashPo's Rubin: Christie Correct to Lash Back at Liberal Media

Thursday, 23 Jan 2014 07:44 PM

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is setting an example of how conservatives should fight back at the liberal media when they get smeared, according to Jennifer Rubin, who pens the "Right Turn" blog at The Washington Post.

Rubin told "The Steve Malzberg Show" Christie was right to have his staff chew out MSNBC after it aired charges by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer that Christie threatened to withhold Superstorm Sandy relief money unless she supported a development project.

"What he is doing, however, should be eye-catching for all conservatives, and that is ... you have to take on the MSNBCs. You have to take on these smears quickly, effectively," she said Thursday.

"The Christie people have been relentless, just spilling out this information to the media, putting out statement after statement, revealing inconsistencies in this woman's story, and that's what all Republicans have to learn to do.

"Rather than whining about the mainstream media, which is biased, which is terribly unfair, they need to fight back and regardless of what you think about Chris Christie, this is a tactic that all Republicans have to adopt, and that is, you smear us, we're going to come after you with a baseball bat. And that's what they're doing."

She said Republicans too often err on the side of passivity.

"They tend to take much too much for too long before they respond and by then, the public opinion has already been set in stone," Rubin said.

"So, whatever you think of Chris Christie, some righteous indignation is important … Republicans who are inundated by this stuff have to show that it's not going to keep them from governing. It's not going to keep them from their agenda.

"[It's] another important lesson for conservatives who sometimes have the inclination to roll up into a little ball and hide from the other side."

On the subject of marijuana, Rubin said President Obama has been inconsistent in his statements about the drug's dangers.

"On one hand he informs us, bizarrely, that cigarette smoking is as bad as pot smoking, to which I wonder whether the limo driver at the White House is allowed to smoke pot before he drives the president around town," she said.

"And then … he seems to be in favor of further legalization. But his spokesman, the infamous Jay Carney, comes out and says no, there hasn't been any change in policy.

"Yet if we take him literally and there's no difference, or it's just as bad as cigarette smoking, why isn't pot legalized? Why isn't he in favor of this if this is his view?"

She said Obama's fence-straddling "smacks of rank pandering to the left and to young people who are completely disillusioned" with him.
