Calls for stricter gun control in the wake of the Navy Yard shooting that killed 12 won't yield any legislative results in Washington, D.C., says conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer.
There is no impetus for gun control on Capitol Hill, he said Tuesday, on Fox News Channel's "Special Report." And the reason isn't the recent recall elections in Colorado that saw the defeat of two state senators who pushed gun control, Krauthammer added.
Rather, he said, it was "rank opportunism."

"Every time you've got a shooting it's like somebody presses a button and you automatically say, 'Gun control,'" Krauthammer said. "You can have all the gun control you want, all the background checks you want, (the shooter) would have obtained the weapon anyway."
The only way America will ever have successful gun control that lowers the murder rate is to follow Australia's lead and confiscate all existing guns, he said. "In the absence of that, it will make no difference because you have a sea of guns out there that would take a hundred years to actually use up and wither away."
Access to guns will always exist in the absence of confiscation, Krauthammer said. "And this isn't a country that will confiscate."
